TEXTBOOK by Dr. Sarment"MANUAL OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
A REFERENCE GUIDE FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT"
This book was written for general dentists and dental hygienists. Since 2003, more than 15.000 copies have been sold. An updated second edition was published in 2009. The first version has been entirely reviewed to include new information on restorative options, implant designs, surgical guidance, long-term maintenance, etc. Many new cases are presented. Beth Peshman, a dental hygienist from Idaho, and Robert Faulkner, a prosthodontist from Oiho, have joined the 2nd edition.

"ORAL HEALTH RELATED TO QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG OLDER PEOPLE"
This chapter focuses on oral quality of life with various dental treatments such as removable dentures and dental implants. Dr. Sarment outlines clinical data and studies pointing towards certain treatments. The clinician must find what minimal treatment benefits the patient the best. For example, saving teeth using periodontal treatment is most efficient. An other example is the use of dental implants to anchor otherwise unstable dentures.

"SINGLE IMPLANTS: A WORD OF CAUTION"
This book chapter specifically addresses implants used to replace front teeth. It is aimed at dental surgeons with significant experience placing implants. Patients at times are missing one front tooth because of an accident or because it has always been missing. Its replacement with an implant must take specific issues in considerations, essentially related to esthetic. It is now possible to obtain very pleasing results.

"CONE-BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FOR DENTAL APPLICATIONS"
At times, a Computed Tomography (CT) radiograph is necessary to prepare for dental implant diagnosis and treatment planning. In this chapter, Dr. Sarment was asked to review the specific use of Cone Beam CTs for diagnosis of dental implants. Other applications such as detection of gum disease and esthetics are also discussed.

"DIAGNOSTIC CASTS, PREIMPLANT PROSTHODONTICS, TREATMENT PROTHESES, AND SURGICAL TEMPLATES"
Dr. Sarment was asked to participate several times in this significant textbook from Dr. Carl Misch. The book is used internationally to teach dentists and surgeons how to plan, prepare and place dental implants. In this chapter, the dentist is explained how to plan for implant teeth such that implants are positioned in ideal locations. In order to obtain maximum comfort and esthetic for the patient, the dentist is urged to carefully prepare the entire sequence of treatment prior to starting the surgical phase. Surgical templates and guides are detailed.

"MATRIX MOLECULES AND GROWTH FACTORS AS INDICATORS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE ACTIVITY"
Gum inflammation causes the release of substances from the body into the tissues and gum pockets. These molecules can be analyzed to detect active infection. This chapter reviews which molecules are most useful and how they can be utilized in practice.

"SIGNALING MOLECULES FOR PERIODONTAL TISSUE ENGINEERING"
Gums and bones which support teeth can, at times, be regenerated. The surgical process is complex and continues to be improved. In chapter reviews the molecules that are key to tissue engineering of gums and bones. The hope is that, in the near futures, molecules will be well understood and tissues will be regenerated predictably.

"STEREOLYTHOGRAPHIC SURGICAL TEMPLATES FOR PLACEMENT OF DENTAL IMPLANTS IN COMPLEX CASES"
Unique surgical guides are fabricated to improved the implant localization according to planning. This method has been compared to precise targeting or accurate landing of airplanes without visibility. Dr. Sarment was an early user of such methods. This article is a patient case report where 5 implants were successfully inserted in a complex situation.

"ACCURACY OF IMPLANT PLACEMENT WITH A STEREOLYTHOGRAPHIC SURGICAL GUIDE"
This early study of advanced surgical guides has been widely cited. It is the first to demonstrate that guides can improve the placement of dental implants. In order to obtain long-term restorative success, dental implants must be accurately positioned in the jaw bone. This research used computed tomography CT scanners and planning software.

"THE BIOLOGICAL SPACE ADAPTATION TO IMPLANT DIMENSIONS"
This study focused on bone healing at the top of the dental implant. This particular area is critical to implant health over the years. This research and many others showed the way the implant industry in redesigning implants. Nowadays, many implants have been redesigned to improved implant healing and bone maintenance at the level where implants and gums meet.

"5MM DIAMETER IMPLANTS WIHTOUT A SMOOTH SURFACE COLLAR: REPORT ON 98 CONSECUTIVE PLACEMENTS"
More that 10 years ago, dental implants to replace back teeth were somewhat new to the dental profession. Dr. Sarment participated in this study of about 100 implants placed on patients missing posterior teeth. The results were good. Interestingly, the design of dental implants were changed over the years. However, the specific implant design used in this study continues to be widely utilized.

"SCANNOGRAPHIC TEMPLATES FOR NOVEL PRE-IMPLANT PLANNING METHODS"
Dentists need to consider bone loss and anatomy such as sinuses and jaw nerves to plan for dental implants. The type of prosthetics is also considered early in the planning phase to account for all parameters. This article shows how to use all these elements and use CT scanning for three-dimensional planning.

"INFLUENCE OF IMPLANT DIAMETER ON SURROUNDING BONE"
Dr. Sarment's student demonstrated that bone density is higher in the presence of dental implants. This study contributes to the body of evidence that the presence of dental implants is beneficial to maintain jaw bone. Jaw bone otherwise tends to shrink away when a tooth is lost.

"IN SITU LOCALIZATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ACTIVE PROTEASES IN CHRONICALLY INFLAMED AND HEALTHY HUMAN GINGIVAL TISSUES"
In his thesis, Dr. Sarment located specific proteases which participate to gum recession. Called metalloproteases, these enzymes have been the target of several treatments including Periostat, the only drug designed to reduce gum disease. This study was the first one to locate proteases in specific layers of the gums
